Not Promised Tomorrow?

Have you heard the phrase “we aren’t promised tomorrow”? I have heard it many times and acknowledged it to be true but never really pondered it. However, this morning I was thinking of a friend who has just transitioned to her heavenly home and is celebrating the joy of it all, and this saying came into my thoughts.

I realize that when people state this, they are referring to our earthly home. God can call us any time so we may not be here on earth tomorrow. However, I think we have to be careful to clarify this statement so others don’t get the wrong understanding about God’s promises.

For me to say “we aren’t promised tomorrow”, it means that God has broken His promise – His promise for eternal life. But we know as Christians that this is not true – God never breaks His promises.

God is not a man, so he does not lie.    He is not human, so he does not change his mind.Has he ever spoken and failed to act?    Has he ever promised and not carried it through?

Numbers 23:19

However, to say that “we aren’t promised tomorrow on this earth” means exactly what it says. “On this earth” clarifies this statement because we do not know what tomorrow will bring.

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. Proverbs 27:1

God knows the plans for each of our lives, and He knows how long we have on this earth. But He also provides eternal life to all who repent and confess Jesus as their Lord and Savior. This is a promise!  We ARE promised tomorrow in heaven!

When we use that statement, it needs to be finished completely. “We are not promised tomorrow on this earth, but we are promised tomorrow in heaven”.

Just as my dear friend did, let us spend our time and live our lives on earth with boldness and confidence knowing that we ARE promised tomorrow in heaven! She is living out that promise right now!

Thanks for stopping by,

Rachel
