Does a Hair Cut have a Spiritual Side??

I went to my favorite hair dresser to get my hair colored and cut recently. Yes, I still color but alas, I am fighting a losing battle. Ten years ago, I could wait for 8-9 weeks before adding color; now I’m fortunate if I can stretch it to 4! Just praying that I can keep the 4-week schedule until after our younger son’s wedding in June 2020, and then see what happens!

Anyway back to the appointment. As Renee was skillfully putting color on my hair, I had a feeling or a knowing that something about this process was spiritual. If you think about it, God is in everything we do so why not a hair cut/color. Let me take you through this process as is applies to Rachel:

Color - the color solution has to be mixed and then applied to my head; you might think that the application process is pretty easy, but noooo! Renee “paints” color on several strands of hair at a time so it takes a while to get around my head, especially since I have thick hair.

Set - the color has to set for 30 minutes

Wash - excess color is washed out and the hair is shampooed

Cut/Trim - it’s time to let my hair grow some more for the wedding so Renee is just trimming now

Dry - dry the hair with the blow dryer & brush

Flat iron - flatten the hair, especially the wild gray hairs that stick out!

Strengthening wax - smooth over hair for a flexible hold

Brush and spray with a little hairspray

Let’s compare this process with the spiritual side and how God uses the hair process to teach me about the needed protection of my mind.

Color - the color represents the Word of God and is mixed to just the right consistency for Rachel to absorb and understand. The mixture might be a particular Bible translation, verses, or a particular word that God wants me to meditate on.

Set - Miriam-Webster defines this "to place with care or deliberate purpose and with relative stability". Just as the color has to be placed on the hair with care and deliberate purpose, the Word has to be placed in my mind with care and deliberate purpose for a specific amount of time. Staying in the Word of God for just the right amount of time will help me retain what I study. It may be 30 minutes, 10 minutes or an hour. Do not let the enemy “set in” so keep focused and don’t sleep during this time.

Wash - this process will remove the excess color and dirt - what has not set in. It could be that the time is not right for this part of God’s Word to set into my mind.

Cut/Trim - as we grow in Christ and live in this world, we pick up or absorb thoughts or interpretations that are not like God so they have to be cut or trimmed off. God wants you to look just as He intended you to, but it is a process. Let Him remove all that is not like Him.

Dry - drying the hair will help to set in the color or the Word and get the hair to a place for final styling or protection for my mind. The Word of God is in me, but I will need protection for my mind.

Flat iron - you know how God can have a calming effect on us? This is the same thing. Using a flat iron will calm down and shape any wild hair that tries to stick up or out or away from God.

Strengthening wax - this product will tame the hair and give protection; it will leave a flexible hold so that we will still have free will in our choices but be strong enough to hold on to God.

Brush and spray with a little hairspray - shaping the style and adding a final light coating of protection.

When we put on the full armour of God, we are wearing the pieces of armour shown in the picture above: helmet of salvation, shield of faith, sword of the Spirit, loins of truth, breastplate of righteousness, feet with preparation of peace. Romans 13:12 adds the "armour of light" to this list.

"When a soldier suited up for battle, the helmet was the last piece of armor to go on. It was the final act of readiness in preparation for combat. A helmet was vital for survival, protecting the brain, the command station for the rest of the body. If the head was badly damaged, the rest of the armor would be of little use."

We must protect our minds from the enemy. Our minds are the most effective way for the enemy to get through to us. Take care of that which covers your head and mind. As I schedule the next hair appointment, I think about the additional protection and renewing of my mind that is a constant process.
